Multi-Output Routing

A drum plugin on one stereo output means your whole kit shares one channel strip. One EQ has to serve the kick and the hats. One compressor squeezes the 808 and the claps together. The moment a mix gets serious, that's the wall. You can't treat drums like a kit if the DAW sees them as a single sound.

Multi-output routing takes the wall down. TrapMan gives you Main plus Aux 1–8, and any lane can feed any of them, so the drums that need their own mix channel get one.

What it is

TrapMan exposes multi-output routing: a Main output and eight aux outputs (Aux 1–8). Assign a lane to an aux and that lane's audio leaves the plugin on its own line, landing on its own channel in your DAW mixer: its own fader, its own inserts, its own sends. Lanes you don't route stay comfortably on Main.

Nine outputs doesn't mean nine mandatory decisions. The working pattern is: Main carries the kit, auxes carry the few drums that need surgery.

Setting it up

Half of this setup lives in your DAW, so the exact clicks vary. Here's the shape of it:

  1. Load TrapMan as a multi-output instrument. DAWs that support plugin multi-out usually decide this at instantiation (in Logic Pro, for instance, you pick the multi-output version of the AU from the instrument selector).
  2. Enable the aux channels in your DAW's mixer. Logic adds them with the little + on the instrument channel strip; other DAWs have their own flow for surfacing a plugin's extra outputs.
  3. Assign lanes to outputs in TrapMan. The classic split: 808 to Aux 1, kick to Aux 2, hats to Aux 3, snare and clap to Aux 4, and everything else rides Main.
  4. Mix like it's a live kit, because now it is: EQ the 808's channel without touching the hats, compress the kick alone, send just the snare to the big reverb.

One honest note: how a DAW exposes a plugin's extra outputs depends on the DAW and the plugin format. The flow above is the documented AU route in Logic. If you don't see aux outputs, search your DAW's manual for "multi-output instruments" before assuming anything's broken.

What it unlocks

  • Per-drum mixing. The reason it exists: every important drum gets its own strip.
  • Drum buses. Route the aux channels into a drum bus in your DAW and you get both worlds: individual control plus one glue compressor over the kit.
  • Parallel compression. Send the kick and 808 auxes to a crushed parallel channel and blend it under the clean kit. This technique alone justifies the setup.
  • Surgical sends. Delay on the hats, reverb on the snare, and a bone-dry kick, all impossible on a stereo output but trivial on auxes.

Multi-out or stems?

Both give you separated drums; the difference is live versus printed. Multi-out keeps every lane running through your mixer in real time. Change the pattern and the mix follows. Audio and stem export prints the separation into files, better for collaborators and archiving. In-the-box mixing wants multi-out; leaving-the-box wants stems.
