Hi-Hat Rolls in Logic Pro: The Fast Way
Logic Pro gives you three native ways to program hi-hat rolls: drawing notes in the piano roll, performing them with Note Repeat, and Step Sequencer ratchets. All workable, none fast. Trap hats live in double- and triple-time subdivisions, and every producer needs a fast way to write them.
"Fast" is the problem in Logic Pro. The rolls themselves are simple (the same note repeated at a finer grid), but the piano roll makes you earn every one of them: zoom in, set the division, draw six tiny notes, fix the velocities, zoom back out. By the third roll of the beat you're doing data entry, not making music.
Logic actually gives you three native ways to do this, and they're worth knowing. Then there's the one-keystroke way.
Way 1: draw the notes by hand
The piano roll route. Set the division fine (say 1/32), take the Pencil tool, and click in each hit of the roll. Total control: every note, length and velocity is exactly yours, but totally slow. Fine for one signature roll you want to micro-edit; painful as your default technique for a genre that rolls constantly.
Way 2: Note Repeat
Logic's Note Repeat (in the toolbar, or via its key command) turns a held key into repeated MIDI notes at a rate you choose from the dialog, with velocity and gate settings alongside. Hold your hat key while recording, and you're performing rolls in real time.
It's genuinely fun, and performance is the right way to get human-feeling hats. The catch: it's a recording workflow. You need to play it well (or quantize after), and editing a recorded roll drops you right back into the piano roll you were avoiding.
Way 3: Step Sequencer ratchets
Logic's Step Sequencer has a Note Repeat edit mode of its own: drag vertically on a step and it subdivides that step into 1 to 16 repeats (a classic ratchet) with per-step control. If you're already sequencing your drums in Step Sequencer patterns, this is the most grid-native option Logic offers, and it's honestly good.
The limits show up at the edges: it lives inside Step Sequencer's pattern regions (a different editing world from your MIDI regions), and taste-tweaking a ratchet (this hit louder, that one pitched, the last one longer) means switching edit modes per property instead of just grabbing notes.
The one-keystroke way: Cmd+U in TrapMan
TrapMan (an AU instrument, so it loads in Logic like any synth) treats the roll as what it is: a subdivided note. In any lane's piano roll, select a hat note that spans where the roll should live and press Cmd+U: the note subdivides by the current grid into a perfectly tight run. Want it tighter? Set a finer grid, hit Cmd+U again. That's the whole technique.

Because the roll is just selected notes, everything after it is normal editing, not mode-switching. Drag a ramp in the velocity lane so the roll swells or fades. Velocity, mostly. A roll at one constant velocity is the "machine-gun hats" effect: it buzzes; a roll that swells into the downbeat or fades out of one breathes. In TrapMan, shape the velocity lane under the roll: a simple ramp is 90% of the trick. Ghosting the in-between hats of the main pattern helps too.
What grid resolution should trap rolls use?
Start at 1/32: it reads as "roll" at trap tempos without turning to noise. 1/16 gives you a slower, chunkier stutter; finer settings get you into buzz-roll territory for short bursts. Because Cmd+U subdivides by the current grid, changing the answer is one setting away.
Can I do triplet rolls for that bouncy hat feel?
Triplet and other odd subdivisions are core trap vocabulary: hats in triple-time against a straight kick.
