Let's get the correction out of the way first, because the title deserves it: Cubase did ship a step sequencer. It's called Beat Designer, it arrived with Cubase 5 back in 2009, and it's still in the box today. Steinberg builds deep MIDI tools (always has) and Beat Designer is a real one.
What Cubase never shipped is the step sequencer producers are actually searching for in 2026: an instrument-grade grid where your samples, patterns, rolls and export live in one place. Beat Designer is a MIDI insert, a pattern generator that drives whatever instrument sits on the track, and it has barely changed since the Obama administration. Steinberg's own forums hold over a decade of threads asking for a rebuild, from "Beat Designer is driving me mad" to feature-request petitions still collecting votes, with no update shipped. Trap producers bounce off it less because of what it does and more because of everything it was never asked to do.

Beat Designer: what Cubase actually ships
For a seventeen-year-old MIDI insert, Beat Designer holds up surprisingly well. It's a pattern sequencer with lanes for drum sounds and up to 64 steps per pattern at resolutions down to fine and triplet values. Velocity is set by where you click in the step (higher for louder), and per-lane swing and flams are built in, which covers a lot of groove ground. Patterns organize into a bank of four subbanks with twelve patterns each (48 slots), and when a pattern's ready you either drag it into the Project window as a MIDI part or trigger patterns with MIDI notes during playback.
That's a genuinely respectable feature list: Sound on Sound was still publishing fresh workflow guides for it in 2023. If your drums are General MIDI-mapped kits and you think in classic drum-machine terms, Beat Designer plus a drum map remains a workable, free-with-Cubase answer.
Where it falls short for trap
The cracks show when you write modern trap with it:
It makes no sound. As a MIDI insert, Beat Designer only sends notes: your actual kit lives in a separate instrument, with its own mapping to keep in sync. Changing a snare means leaving the sequencer, and auditioning samples means round-tripping between two plugin windows that don't know about each other.
The workflow is generate-then-commit. Patterns get dragged out as MIDI parts or triggered by notes; either way, detailed editing (that one hat louder, this 808 slid, a roll that swells) sends you to the Key Editor, away from the grid. There's no linked piano roll living behind each lane.
No modern drum-tool amenities. No sample import, no kit browser, no velocity lane per sound, no halftime or clip effects, no stem export. Adding a modern step grid to Cubase as VST3
TrapMan loads in Cubase as a VST3 instrument (an instrument track, not a MIDI insert), so the sequencer and the sounds are finally the same plugin. The workflow:
- Add an instrument track with TrapMan as the instrument (macOS or Windows 10/11, the plugin ships both).
- Build the kit inside the sequencer. Load the Core Kit (808s, kicks, hats, snares, claps, percussion) or drag in your own WAV, AIFF, MP3 or FLAC samples, up to 64 lanes, with an on-device AI sorter that files a sample folder into kicks, snares, hats and 808s.
- Write on the step grid while Cubase loops. Every lane opens into its own piano roll with a velocity lane, so the "leave the grid to edit notes" problem disappears: select a hat note and

- Drag the result out. MIDI OUT exports a keyswitch clip for the current pattern (TrapMan plays it in sync with the project), or bounce the pattern to audio, full mix or stems, with the built-in Slow (halftime + pitch-down) and Slap (soft-clip knock) effects printed in.
Beat Designer walked so this workflow could run: pattern thinking stays, but the kit, the rolls, the velocity shaping and the export all collapse into the same window.

Is Beat Designer still in current Cubase versions?

Will Steinberg ever update Beat Designer?
Nobody outside Steinberg knows, but the track record is what users plan around: rebuild requests have run on the official forums since at least 2013 without a meaningful update shipping. If your drum workflow needs more than Beat Designer does today, build it on tools that exist rather than on a rebuild that may never come.
Can I use Beat Designer and TrapMan together?
Nothing stops you. Some producers keep Beat Designer for quick GM-mapped sketches on existing instruments and use TrapMan when the beat needs its own kit, rolls and stems. They occupy different slots (MIDI insert versus instrument), so they never conflict.
Does TrapMan work in Cubase on Windows?

Why not just use a drum sampler plus the Key Editor?
