If you learned drums in FL Studio's channel rack and then moved to Logic, Ableton, Cubase or Pro Tools, you know the feeling: melodies got better, drums got slower. Piano rolls are built for pitch, and programming a hat pattern in one feels like filling in a spreadsheet.

TrapMan's step grid is the fix, the classic grid workflow as a plugin (AU, VST3, AAX), living inside whatever DAW you actually use.

What you see

Lanes, stacked top to bottom, one sample per lane. The sample's name sits right on the row, so the grid reads like a mixer for rhythm. TrapMan holds up to 64 lanes, and you fill them by dragging samples straight in: WAV, AIFF, MP3 or FLAC.

Each lane runs a row of sixteen steps with beat markers every four, so you always know where beats 2, 3 and 4 land: no counting cells. If you're not sure why sixteen steps became the format for drums, the short history is in What is a step sequencer?

Writing a beat

Click a step to place a hit; click it again to remove it. The pattern keeps looping while you edit, so you're sculpting a groove you can hear, not placing notes in silence.

No step has to hit at the same volume, either. Every lane opens into its own piano roll with a velocity lane, so once the rhythm sits right you can dig in and shape dynamics. Ghost the in-between hats, lean on the downbeat, make a static pattern breathe.

Linked to a piano roll

The grid handles rhythm; the per-lane piano roll handles everything the grid shouldn't. Melodic parts, 808 lines, rolls and micro-edits all happen in the roll, and it stays linked to the same lane and pattern, one part, two views.

This is also where the keyboard pays off: select a hat note and Cmd+U subdivides it by the current grid, which is a hat roll in one keystroke. The whole hands-on-keys workflow is covered in keyboard shortcuts.

Patterns 1–12

A beat isn't one loop, so TrapMan gives you a bank of named patterns, twelve of them on MIDI keyswitches from C0. Sketch the main groove in pattern 1, strip it down for a verse in pattern 2, go double-time for the hook in pattern 3, then switch between them live, or chain patterns into a longer run for arrangement.

Workflow tips

  • Start hats-first. Hats carry the motion of a beat; get an eighth-note bed looping, then place the kick and snare against it. Grooves come together faster when there's already movement.
  • Mute and solo lanes while you build. Solo the kick and 808 to make sure they lock; mute the hats to check the skeleton still knocks on its own.
  • Use pattern slots for variations, not just sections. Duplicate the vibe across a couple of slots, push the hats or move the kick in each, and keyswitch between them to hear which one wins.

Versus piano-roll-first DAWs

To be fair to the piano roll: for chords, melodies and anything pitched, it's the right tool, and every major DAW ships an excellent one. But for drums, a grid shows you the whole bar as a shape, every edit is one click, and nothing needs quantizing after the fact.

TrapMan's answer isn't to replace your DAW's editor. It's to drop the grid in alongside it, with a linked piano roll for the parts that need pitch. Drums at grid speed, in the DAW you already live in.
