Per-Step Velocity

You programmed the right pattern. Kick's in the pocket, snare cracks on 2 and 4, hats are rolling, and it still sounds like a metronome with opinions. That's not a rhythm problem. It's a dynamics problem: every hit is landing at exactly the same volume, and no human has ever played drums that way.

Velocity is the fix. It's the difference between programmed and played, and in TrapMan every step and every note carries its own.

What it is

Velocity is how hard a hit fires. In TrapMan, no two steps have to hit alike: each note in a lane has its own velocity, shown as a bar in the velocity lane at the bottom of the piano roll. Tall bar, loud hit. Short bar, soft hit. A row of identical hats becomes a phrase the moment those bars stop being identical.

Where to click, what to drag

  1. Get the rhythm looping on the step grid first. Velocity shapes a groove. It can't replace one.
  2. Select the lane you want to humanize. Its piano roll opens with the velocity lane running underneath the notes, one bar per hit.
  3. Drag bars down for the hits that should sit back: those are your ghost notes. Leave the downbeat hits tall. Those are your accents.
  4. Keep it playing while you drag. You're mixing dynamics by ear, not by math; the loop tells you when the bounce shows up.

Accents on the beat, ghosts in between

The pattern that teaches this best is a hat line. Accent the strong eighth notes, ghost the ones between, and a flat tick-tick-tick turns into a bounce:

Read the hat row out loud: LOUD, normal, soft, normal, then repeat. The accents pin the pulse down, the ghosts pull your ear forward into the next beat. That push-pull is the entire secret behind hats that feel alive instead of sequenced.

The same logic maps to every lane. Snare ghosts just before beat 3 set up the backbeat. A kick that hits a touch softer on its syncopated repeat sounds intentional instead of copy-pasted.

Tips

  • Accents first, ghosts second. Pin the downbeats at full force, then carve the in-between hits down. Working the other way round turns into mush.
  • Don't randomize. Real drummers aren't random: they're consistent in a pattern of loud and soft. A repeating accent-ghost cycle grooves harder than scattered values every time.
  • Shape your rolls. After the Cmd+U subdivide trick from keyboard shortcuts, slope the roll's velocity bars upward so it swells into the downbeat, or downward so it decays like a bounced ball.
  • Ghost the 808 sparingly. Sub frequencies at low velocity can vanish on small speakers. If the low end disappears, that ghost note probably needs to be a normal hit or a rest.
  • Velocity before effects. If the groove is stiff, fix the dynamics before reaching for processing. A well-shaped velocity lane does more for feel than any plugin in the chain.

Flat velocity is the loudest tell that a beat came off a grid. Thirty seconds of dragging bars is what hides it.
