Swing, Shuffle and Groove: Make Grids Feel Human
Swing moves exactly one thing: every second 8th note lands late, while the on-beats never move. The amount is a percentage: 50% is straight time, 66.7% is exact triplet swing, and everything musical happens between 52% and 70%. Shuffle is the same mechanism pushed near the triplet ratio and voiced louder.
Program a beat, quantize it perfectly, and something strange happens: it's correct and it's dead. This is the complaint that fills production forums in the producer's own words: stiff, robotic, computerized, like it came from a toy. Every hit exactly on the grid is how no human has ever played anything. Real drummers push and drag, and the most consistent thing they do with time is a very specific inconsistency called swing.
Swing has a reputation for being mystical, and the vocabulary doesn't help: swing, shuffle, groove, pocket, feel: five words that seem to mean "the good thing your beat doesn't have." But mechanically, swing is one of the simplest ideas in rhythm. It moves exactly one category of note, in exactly one direction, by an amount you can dial. Once you see which notes move, you can write it by hand.
What swing actually moves
Take a bar of straight 8th notes. They divide each beat into two equal halves: one-and-two-and. Swing makes those halves unequal: the first half of each beat gets longer, the second gets shorter. In practice that means one thing: every second 8th note lands late. The on-beats never move; the off-beats slide toward the next beat, and the ride starts to lope instead of march.
The amount is a ratio between the long half and the short half. Straight time is 1:1. The classic jazz "triplet swing" is 2:1, the first half twice as long as the second, as if the beat were split into three and the off-beat played the last third. A hard dotted shuffle is 3:1. Real players float between these poles, and tend to swing harder at slower tempos, tighter at faster ones.
Sequencers compress all of that into the swing percentage: the share of each 8th-note pair given to the first note. 50% is straight. 66.7% is exact triplet swing. 75% is the full dotted feel. Everything musical happens between 52% and 70%. The knob does nothing more exotic than slide the off-beats by that amount.
Shuffle is the same mechanism worn louder: when the swing is strong enough (around the triplet ratio) and the off-beats are actually voiced as hits, the feel gets called a shuffle. Swing is the parameter; shuffle is a feel you reach near the top of its range.

- Same notes, same amount, every bar. Swing is a system of lateness. Random lateness is sloppiness; repeated lateness is feel.
- Swing the time, then the volume. A swung off-beat almost always wants to be quieter than the on-beat it follows. Pair the nudge with the three-level velocity system and the groove locks in: timing and dynamics are the two halves of "human."

What swing percentage should I use?
Start at 54–58% and push until the groove lopes, then back off one notch. The exact triplet setting (66.7%) is a strong flavor: it stops reading as "humanized" and starts reading as a shuffle. And remember the tempo rule: slower beats absorb more swing, faster beats want less.
Should the kick swing too?
Usually not first. The kick and the downbeat hats are the listener's clock: keep them planted and swing the off-beat hats, shakers and ghost snares around them. Heavily swung kicks are a legitimate flavor (some boom bap and UK garage lives there), but they make everything feel loose, so add them last and on purpose.
What's the difference between swing and humanize?
Direction. Swing moves one specific class of notes (off-beats) one specific way (late) by a repeatable amount: it's structured, so it reads as intent. Humanize functions add random offsets to everything, which reads as noise. A groove is a pattern of deviations, not a cloud of them.
Why does heavy swing make my beat sound like a different rhythm?
Because at 66.7% it literally is one: the off-beats land on the last third of each beat, which is the triplet grid. Past that point you're not "swinging 8ths" anymore, you're playing a triplet feel, which is why heavy swing and triplet hat phrases blur into each other at the extremes.
