MIDI Drag Export

Every beat hits the moment where it has to leave the plugin and live on the timeline, next to the melody, the vocal, the automation. In a lot of drum plugins that moment is a tax: export, import, rebuild, re-quantize, and momentum dies at the border crossing.

In TrapMan the border crossing is one drag. Grab MIDI OUT, drop it in your DAW, and the pattern is on your timeline, in sync. But it's worth understanding what actually lands there, because TrapMan does something smarter than dumping notes.

What actually exports

The MIDI OUT drag exports a keyswitch clip for the current pattern: a small MIDI clip whose job is to tell TrapMan "play this pattern here." Drop it on the track hosting TrapMan and the plugin performs the pattern in perfect sync with your project.

It is deliberately not a raw dump of every note in your pattern. The sequencing (every step, every roll, every velocity) stays where it lives, inside TrapMan.

Why a keyswitch clip beats a note dump

  • Your edits stay live. Fix the hats, re-pitch the 808, reshape a velocity ramp: the clips on your timeline pick up the change on the next pass, because the plugin is still the thing playing the pattern. A dumped clip is frozen the second it lands; this one never goes stale.
  • The timeline stays readable. One clean clip per section instead of a wall of notes per bar. Your arrangement view describes the song, not the drum programming.
  • Sections stay swappable. The clip selects a pattern by keyswitch, so re-pointing a section at a different pattern is a one-note edit: the same octave-below-C1 logic from patterns and keyswitches.

How to use it

  1. Finish the pattern you want on the timeline: it exports whichever pattern is current.
  2. Drag MIDI OUT into your DAW, onto the track that hosts TrapMan. That part matters: a keyswitch only works if it reaches the plugin, so the clip belongs on TrapMan's own track.
  3. Place it at the right bar, then loop or duplicate it like any MIDI region: eight bars of hook is one clip stretched or repeated.
  4. Repeat per section. Switch TrapMan to the verse pattern and drag again, or duplicate an existing clip and move its keyswitch note to the verse's key.

Notes per DAW

The mechanics are the same everywhere (the clip must land on TrapMan's track), but here's how the drop looks in practice:

  • Logic Pro / GarageBand (AU): drop into the Tracks area, on TrapMan's software instrument track.
  • Ableton Live: drop into the Arrangement on TrapMan's track, or into a Session clip slot, which turns your patterns into launchable clips.
  • Cubase: drop onto the instrument track running TrapMan, right at the bar you want.
  • Pro Tools (AAX): drop onto the MIDI or instrument track that's routed to TrapMan.

If a dropped clip plays nothing, check the track: nine times out of ten the clip landed somewhere TrapMan can't hear it.

When you'd rather have audio

MIDI keeps everything editable: that's its whole argument. Sometimes you want the opposite: committed sounds, or stems a collaborator can open without owning the plugin. That's the audio export's job. And if you found your song structure in-plugin with pattern chaining, the timeline translation is mechanical: one keyswitch clip per section, in the chain's order.
