MIDI or Audio? Moving Beats Into Your DAW the Right Way
The rule for moving a beat into your DAW: drag MIDI while the beat is still changing (clips stay editable and follow the session tempo), then bounce audio stems once the sound is locked, for mixing, collaborators and archiving. Stay editable while it moves, commit when it stops.
The beat is done, inside the plugin. Your DAW timeline, meanwhile, is empty, and between the two sits a small decision with big consequences: do you drag the beat over as MIDI, or as audio?
Most producers pick by habit rather than by stage. MIDI-always people end up with arrangements that fall apart the day the session opens on another machine. Audio-always people freeze their drums an hour too early, then re-bounce eleven times because the hat pattern needed one more edit. Both camps are using a good tool at the wrong moment.
The rule that fixes it fits in a sentence: stay editable while the beat is still moving, commit when it stops. But the trade-offs underneath are worth understanding once, properly.
What MIDI gives you (and what it actually is)
MIDI is instructions, not sound: featherweight clips that follow your session tempo and keep every edit alive. The catch is symmetrical: instructions need the instrument present. A MIDI clip without its plugin is sheet music without a band, which is why MIDI is the working format, not the delivery format.

What audio gives you
Audio is the opposite bargain: heavier, frozen, and absolutely portable. A WAV file plays on any machine, in any DAW, in ten years, with nothing installed. Mix engineers want it, collaborators want it, and your own future self wants it the day a project refuses to open.
Dragging audio stems out of TrapMan bounces the pattern as it actually sounds, which includes printing the Slow and Slap effects into the render. What you hear in the plugin is what lands in the file: halftime, pitch-down, soft-clip knock and all. The cost is that audio doesn't follow its source: change the pattern afterward and the file doesn't care. Every edit after the bounce means bouncing again.

The workflow that keeps edits alive
Put the two halves in order and the workflow writes itself. Build and arrange on MIDI: keyswitch clips on the timeline, patterns switching per section, every drum decision still reversible. Why does my dragged MIDI clip show only a few notes?
Because it's a keyswitch clip, not a note-for-note transcription. The notes you see select and start the pattern; TrapMan plays the actual hits in sync with your DAW. It looks sparse and that's correct: the pattern detail lives in the plugin, where editing it updates every clip that references it.
Do Slow and Slap come along when I drag MIDI?
They're heard, not exported: the plugin is still doing the playing, so the clip sounds exactly like the pattern does. They get printed into a file only when you bounce audio. That's the practical difference in one line: MIDI performs the effects live, audio freezes them.
Should I send MIDI or stems to a mix engineer?
Stems, always. An engineer's session shouldn't depend on owning your plugins, and audio guarantees they hear what you heard. Per-lane stems (kick, snare, hats, 808 on separate files) beat a single stereo bounce: that's the difference between mixing your drums and merely turning them up.
Does dragged audio follow my session tempo?
Not by itself: a bounced file is fixed at the tempo it was rendered at. Your DAW can time-stretch it, but stretched drums can smear transients. The cleaner habit: keep the beat on MIDI until the tempo is settled, then bounce. Audio last remains the rule.
