Raw samples are rarely session-ready. There's dead air before the transient, so the kick lands late against the grid. There's a click where somebody chopped the file mid-waveform. The 808 is in F when your track is in G#. In most plugin workflows, fixing any of that means a round-trip to an external editor, and there goes the loop you were vibing to.

TrapMan puts a sample editor on every lane instead: trim, fades, pitch, normalize and a full ADSR envelope, applied to that lane's sample while the pattern keeps playing.

The five controls

Trim

Cut the sample down to the piece you want. The big win is slicing off silence before the transient: dead air at the front of a file makes every hit land late, and a whole kit's worth of that reads as sloppy timing no matter how tight your programming is. Trim to the transient and the step grid suddenly feels quantized again. It's also the chop tool: pull one hit out of a longer recording and the lane plays just that slice.

Fades

Fades clean up the edges. A short fade-in kills the click a hard chop leaves at the start of a file; a fade-out stops an abrupt cut from popping at the tail. Micro-fades are inaudible as fades: you only hear the clicks disappear.

Pitch

Tune the sample without leaving the lane. The headline use is 808s (an 808 that isn't in the track's key is a wrong note repeated all song), but it's also for hats pitched up until they sparkle, snares pitched down until they thicken, and percs nudged until they sit.

Normalize

Normalize raises the sample so its peak hits full scale: the fix for a quiet source file you'd otherwise be compensating for everywhere. One honest warning below, because normalize is the most misunderstood button in audio.

ADSR

The envelope (attack, decay, sustain, release) reshapes how the sample plays without touching the file. It's the difference between owning a recording and owning an instrument.

Where ADSR earns its keep

  • 808 tails: let sustain and release breathe so the sub blooms under the pattern and hands off smoothly to the next note.
  • Tight hats: short decay, sustain at zero. Any hat sample becomes a disciplined tick that leaves room for the rolls.
  • Roomy snares: a shortened release dries up baked-in room sound you can't EQ away.
  • Soft attacks: ease a sample's attack when a click at the front reads too aggressive for the beat.

A clean-up pass in five steps

  1. Drop the sample on a lane: the classifier files it on import (AI sample sorting), then the editor makes it session-ready.
  2. Trim to the transient and to just the slice you want.
  3. Add micro-fades at both edges: clicks gone.
  4. Pitch it to the track's key. 808s first, always.
  5. Shape the ADSR while the pattern loops, listening in context.

The normalize gotcha

Normalize equalizes peaks, not loudness. A normalized hi-hat and a normalized 808 both touch full scale, but the 808 (dense, sustained) sounds far louder than the hat's one spike. Normalizing your whole kit doesn't balance it; it just makes everything's peak identical. Use normalize to rescue quiet files, then balance the kit with your ears: per-step velocity for the dynamics, your mix decisions for the rest.
