How to Make Drill Beats: Sliding 808s, Ghost Hats, Dark Bounce

A drill drum pattern is a half-time groove typically at 138–151 BPM: kicks tumbling in a three-count, a snare on beat 3 answered by a late second hit on the "and" of beat 4, ghosted skipping hi-hats, and an 808 sliding between pitches in the holes the kick deliberately leaves.

Drill drums don't walk straight. Where trap rides an even bounce, drill lurches: kicks landing in a tumbling three-count, a snare that hits beat 3 and then hits again, late, like an echo that decided to be a drum. The hats skip and flutter around the pulse instead of keeping it, and underneath everything an 808 dives between pitches like it's being dragged downstairs.

The good news for anyone programming this on a grid: none of it is random. Drill grooves are tight patterns with very deliberate holes, and a step sequencer is the easiest place to see exactly where the holes go.

Here's the anatomy: a one-paragraph history, the two-row core every drill beat shares, the ghost-hat grid that makes it skip, and an honest way to program sliding 808s.

One paragraph of history

Drill came out of Chicago in the early 2010s. Chief Keef, whose 2011–2012 run of viral hits carried it to the mainstream, is its primary popularizer, with producer Young Chop defining the early sound. From 2012 the style crossed the Atlantic and mutated in Brixton, South London: UK drill fused the Chicago blueprint with road rap and grime DNA, built on sliding bass, hard-hitting kicks and dark melodies, with skippy hi-hats and tempos typically between 138 and 151 BPM. Then the loop closed: Brooklyn drill rose in the late 2010s with artists like Pop Smoke rapping over beats from UK producers such as 808Melo and AXL Beats, sending the London sound back across the water.

The kick stumbles in threes: the downbeat, the "a" of beat 1, the "and" of beat 2, then once more on the "and" of beat 3, right behind the snare. The snare cracks beat 3 like trap would, but the second hit on the "and" of beat 4 is the drill signature: it drags the bar's weight backward, so every new downbeat arrives like a lunge.

Notice what's not there. Beat 4 has no kick at all: that hole is where the 808 slide usually lives, and filling it with drums is the fastest way to make a drill beat stop sounding like drill.

Ghost hats: the skip

Drill hats are felt more than heard: a few honest hits surrounded by ghosts. In grid notation, x is a normal hit and o is a ghost: same sound, a fraction of the velocity.

Play it against the core and the skip appears. The full-strength hats mark a lazy half-speed pulse; the ghosts flutter in between, and that little oo pair after beat 3 tugs the ear forward without adding any real weight. Program it exactly like it reads: place all the hits first, then drag the ghosts way down in the velocity lane. Ghosts at full volume are just hats: the skip lives in the difference.

Sliding 808s, honestly

The drill 808 doesn't sit on a root note. It swoops. The classic slide is a pitch glide between notes, and on a sample-based sequencer the honest way to get there is to write the movement: a run of two or three short 808 notes stair-stepping down into the target pitch. At drill tempo, with a long-tailed 808, the stair-step blurs into a slide.

In TrapMan that happens in the 808 lane's own piano roll: write the main hits long, tuck the short passing notes between them, and nudge with Cmd+Arrows until the run locks against the kick tumble. Cmd+Shift+Down drops the whole phrase an octave when the hook needs to sit lower, and the sample editor's pitch control retunes the 808 itself when the track changes key. Picking the right sounds

From the Core Kit's six families, drill wants a specific corner of each:

  • 808: long tail, present mids. The slide only reads if the note is still audible while it moves.
  • Kick: hard and short. It has to articulate the three-count without smearing into the 808.
  • Snare: dark and tight. Both snare hits use the same sound; the placement does the talking.
  • Hats: one crisp closed hat covers the whole ghost grid. Resist stacking more.
  • Perc: optional. A single dark rim or woodblock answering once or twice a bar is plenty.

Make it darker

Velocity you've already met. It is the hat technique. Two more moves finish the picture. Why do my drill hats sound stiff?

Two usual suspects: every hat is at the same velocity (kill the ghosts' volume: they should sit far below the main hits), or the grid is too full. Drill hats need holes; if every eighth note is occupied, delete until the skip shows up.
